After the start of Polish Defensive War of 1939 Starzyński, refused to leave Warsaw together with other state authorities and diplomats on September 4, 1939. Warsaw is on fire. Warsaw - bombarded constantly from the air and from the ground - is turning into rubble. We have no light, no water, no food. Sixty thousand dead, one hundred thousand wounded – this is the result of the terrible fury of the invader.

Today the Germans fired ten wagons of ammunition at Warsaw. You can shoot ten times more and you won't capture Warsaw anyway, because nothing can break the spirit of our resistance.

For the last time, I appeal to our allies. I'm not asking for help anymore. It's too late for that. I demand revenge. For burnt churches, destroyed monuments, tears, and blood of innocently murdered people, for the torment of those torn apart by bombs, for those burnt by the fire of phosphorus shells, strangled in collapsed shelters and cellars. And you, criminals and barbarians, who have attacked our country with fire and death, know that there is justice, that there is a court before which we must all stand to take responsibility for our actions. Let all the radio stations, and especially the French stations that hear us, repeat to the whole world: Warsaw is defending itself, Warsaw is fighting. Poland has not yet perished!

Today's enemy air raid that destroyed the city with extraordinary fury using all means available has undoubtedly been calculated to ignite fear and panic among the population of the capital in order to break their spirit.

According to the information obtained, these are their last attempts before the German bombers fly off to the western front.

The extraordinary intensification of the raid and the number of bombers involved confirm this information.

The destruction of our Capital City is a fait accompli. Nothing worse can happen to us anymore. In the name of God and our Homeland, we shall survive. See more

I wanted Warsaw to be great. I believed it would be great. My colleagues and I made plans, drafted the great future of Warsaw. And Warsaw is great. It happened sooner than we thought. Not in fifty years, not in a hundred, but today I see that Warsaw is great.

Speaking to you now, I see her through the windows in all her greatness and glory, surrounded by clouds of smoke, flames of fire, the wonderful, indestructible, mighty, fighting Warsaw. And although wonderful orphanages have now been replaced by rubble, although barricades covered with corpses have now replaced parks, although our libraries and hospitals are burning – Warsaw is defending its honour at the pinnacle of greatness and glory today, not in fifty years, not in a hundred years.

Citizens! Today was a difficult day for Warsaw. Enemy missiles hit hundreds of homes. But above all, they hit the Castle, hit the cathedral, hit the Jesuit church, hit many places dear to our hearts. These are barbaric methods, hitting churches or national monuments on purpose, like the Castle or Belvedere. These barbaric methods that have nothing to do with war, this is not war. These cutthroat methods must arouse anger, severe anger that will avenge all the wrongs that the Warsaw population is experiencing today.

I am setting out to create units of Defenders of Warsaw. The first unit is to be ready immediately. We must immediately show that Warsaw has soldiers, that Varsovians are ready to rise and take up arms today, in this moment, in one or two hours, and fight for Warsaw and their homeland.

Citizens! I call on 600 young people who want to immediately take a rifle and fight, fight to the death to avenge the fallen. I want 600 young brave people ready to die for Warsaw and for their homeland. Citizens! Enroll! Those who are determined to do so immediately, in this moment, or rather in half an hour. In half an hour, lieutenant Kępski from my group will stand in front of Mostowski Palace and register these volunteers. Citizens! If there are more people, you will go home and wait for my call. Today I need 600 people, I repeat 600 young, strong, healthy people wishing to fight for their homeland. In a moment I will show up in front of Mostowski Palace and I am asking for 600 young people. Citizens! My appeals have never disappointed. I won't be disappointed now.

Every second, there are thousands of facts, thousands of events that strengthen my faith in the immortal, indestructible force of the Polish people. Citizens! After everything, yesterday a German tank managed to reach the walls of Warsaw without getting shot, and who finally took it down before it could enter the city? Polish women! This is force of our nation! This is the strength of the people!
