To avoid being attacked by diplomats, journalists, and representatives of the foremost Swedish public, I hid in an aristocratic guesthouse, in the low bay of Leading, but even here there is no end to the eternal question: “Is the Soviet Union ready to go with Hitler? conquer the whole world. The end of civilization and Christian culture. What now? What awaits Sweden and the Swedes? " See more

An event of great importance, an event that can immediately and unexpectedly turn the whole world situation. I imagine a stir in London and Paris! .. Moscow's bold move. The imperialists did not think that we would show such decisiveness and so cleverly play the international political situation! I myself learned about this important event only today from Swedish newspapers. I came to my office and, first of all, as always, took up the newspapers. “Treaty of the Soviet Union and Germany. Signatures: Molotov and Ribbentrop. My hand did not drop the newspaper, I was not even particularly surprised. The move on our part is the surest, and logical conclusion from the current world situation. No, I was not even very surprised to read the message in Swedish newspapers. I just got angry and annoyed that we, the plenipotentiaries, were so little informed. Encryption from Moscow came in late afternoon. And the staff of the plenipotentiary and trade mission in the morning excitedly surrounded me, wanting to know what the pact means? Not everyone understands the logic of such a political move. I need to clarify, give a correct explanation and explain how the policy of the USSR takes into account the world situation and acts appropriately.

Erkko (the Finnish Minister of Foreign Affairs) and the rightist Social Democrats are trying to calm public opinion in Finland, explaining that there won’t be a war, and if there will be a battle between major states, the war will bypass Finland. The question is not about Finland, but rather about Poland.

Tanner also gave a speech calming the Finns: “The war will not draw us in.” This is telling. Tanner listens to London. Did they come up with something at Downing Street? It is clear that Finland on its own isn’t interesting to anyone. It is important only as the avenue of approach to the Soviet Union. In the imminent world war, the important question is who will control that avenue: the western European great powers or Nazi Germany?

The Hitlerites are working strongly on Finland. The newspapers make me sick, they are preparing an avenue of approach towards the USSR. They are trying to flatter the Finns, reminding them about the policies of Russification under the Tsar, the crimes of Russia against an independent Finland. The Finnish Nazis are trying to convince the Finnish people that the “eastern neighbour”, although under the new name of USSR, remains the same “enemy” which it was before the revolution, having introduced atheism, destroyed the family unit, and revoked to the “sacred right” to private property. The summer continues to be exceptionally good in terms of weather, but the international situation remains filled with threats. I am worried about Finland and the interest in that country taken by not just the Swedes. Chauvinism is fuelled by the pro-Nazis, with increasing support from the Social Democrats. See more
